Anatoma was named by Woodward (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Anatominae.

It was reranked as Scissurella (Anatoma) by Ladd (1966), Ladd (1972), Ladd (1982).

It was assigned to Scissurella by Ladd (1966), Ladd (1972), Ladd (1982); to Anatominae by McLean (1989); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anatomidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
