Natica (Magnatica) sutherlandi was named by Marwick (1924) [TYPE LOCALITY: Chatton, Southland, South Island, New Zeland (Duntroonian = Chattian). TYPE REPOSITORY: GSNZ (now GNS Science, Lower Hutt, New Zealand).].

It was recombined as Magnatica (Spelaenacca) sutherlandi by Fleming (1966), Beu et al. (1990).
