Chilodonta was named by Etallon (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 790].

It was assigned to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Chilodontidae by Bandel (2010); and to Chilodontinae by Wenz (1938), Knight et al. (1960), Kase (1984), Bouchet et al. (2005), Kaim et al. (2014).
