Metatirolites was named by Mojsisovics (1893). Its type is Ammonites foliaceus.

It was reranked as Tirolites (Metatirolites) by Hyatt and Smith (1905).

It was assigned to Tirolites by Hyatt and Smith (1905); to Buchitidae by Spath (1951); and to Ussuritidae by Tozer (1994).
