Taxonomy
Pleurorhynchus cuneus was named by Conrad (1840). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Hoareicardia.

It was recombined as Conocardium cuneus by Hall (1855), Miller (1877), Hall (1885), Nettelroth (1889), Clarke (1908), Stauffer et al. (1911), Prosser and Kindle (1913), Savage (1931), La Rocque (1950), Nussmann (1961), Fagerstrom (1961), Ellison (1965); it was recombined as Conocardium cuneum by Hall (1883); it was recombined as Hippocardia cunea by Pojeta and Runnegar (1976), Hoare (1989), Hoare and Aghababula (2001), Hoare et al. (2002); it was recombined as Hoareicardia cunea by Rogalla and Amler (2006), Wagner (2023).
