Captorhinus aguti

Taxonomy

Ectocynodon aguti was named by Cope (1882). Its type specimen is AMNH 4333, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coffee Creek, 34 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.

It was recombined as Pariotichus aguti by Cope (1896), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Captorhinus aguti by Case (1911), Hay (1930), Seltin (1959), Fox and Bowman (1966), Baird and Carroll (1967), Daly (1973), Modesto (1998).

Synonyms

Bayloria morei was named by Olson (1941). Its type specimen is FMNH 1936 (W.M. 1639), a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Craddock Bonebed, Brush Creek, 38 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Bayloria.

It was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus aguti by Reisz and Heaton (1982).
Pariotichus isolomus was named by Cope (1896). Its type specimen is AMNH 4338, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coffee Creek, 34 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.

It was recombined as Captorhinus isolomus by Case (1911), Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus aguti by Seltin (1959), Fox and Bowman (1966).
Captorhinus angusticeps was named by Cope (1896). Its type specimen is AMNH 4438, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coffee Creek, 34 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Captorhinus.

It was recombined as Pariotichus angusticeps by Broom (1910); it was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus aguti by Seltin (1959), Fox and Bowman (1966).
Pariotichus aduncus was named by Cope (1896). Its type specimen is AMNH 4332, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Indian Creek, 35 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.

It was recombined as Captorhinus aduncus by Case (1911), Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus aguti by Seltin (1959), Fox and Bowman (1966).
Hypopnous squaliceps was named by Cope (1896). Its type specimen is AMNH 4335, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coffee Creek, 34 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Hypopnous.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Romeria by Eaton (1964); it was considered a nomen dubium by Case (1911); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fox and Bowman (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus aguti by Seltin (1959), Baird and Carroll (1967).
Paracaptorhinus neglectus was named by Watson (1954). Its type specimen is DMSW R 9, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Paracaptorhinus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Captorhinus aguti by Heaton (1979).
