Plagiothyra was named by Whidborne (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Fras Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797]. It is the type genus of Plagiothyridae.
It was assigned to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plagiothyridae by Knight et al. (1960), Bouchet et al. (2005).
