Cheungkongella was named by Shu et al. (2001). Its type is Cheungkongella ancestralis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Phlogites by Chen et al. (2003).

It was assigned to Ascidiacea by Shu et al. (2001); to Cambroernids by Caron et al. (2010); and to Urochordata by McMenamin (2019).
