Pleurodontagama was named by Borsuk-Bialynicka and Moody (1984).

It was assigned to Priscagamidae by Alifanov (1993); to Agamidae by Gao and Hou (1996); to Pleurodontagamini by Alifanov (1996); to Priscagaminae by Borsuk-Bialynicka and Moody (1984), Gao and Hou (1995) and Gao and Norell (2000); and to Hoplocercidae by Alifanov (2000).
