Virginoceras was named by Ruzhencev (1960). Its type is Neomanticoceras erraticum. It is the type genus of Virginoceratidae.
It was assigned to Virginoceratidae by Yatskov (1990); and to Virginoceratinae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
