Trachyspira was named by Gemmellaro (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 109,1130]. It is the type genus of Trachyspiridae.
It was assigned to Neritopsinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trachyspiridae by Nützel et al. (2007).
