Craspedostoma was named by Lindström (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l S Ludl-u]. Its type is Craspedostoma elegantulum. It is the type genus of Craspedostomatinae.
It was assigned to Trochonematidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Craspedostomatidae by Knight et al. (1960); to Architaenoglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Craspedostomatinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
