Natica fragilis was named by Conrad (1830) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Miocene-Early Pliocene; Virginia-North Carolina.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 1551, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Sigaretus fragilis by Conrad (1842) and Martin (1904); it was recombined as Sigaretus (Naticina) fragilis by Conrad (1863); it was recombined as Sinum fragilis by Gardner (1943) and Hendy et al. (2008).
