Canarium was named by Schumacher (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1074]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Strombus (Canarium) by Cossmann (1904), Abrard (1946), Steininger (1971), Ladd (1972), Ladd (1982), Mandic and Steininger (2003).

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Schumacher (1817); to Strombus by Cossmann (1904), Abrard (1946), Steininger (1971), Ladd (1972), Ladd (1982); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Strombidae by Mandic and Steininger (2003), Kronenberg and Lee (2007).
