Taxonomy
Estrellaspongia irregulara was named by Garcia-Bellido and Rigby (2004). Its type locality is Lower Carboniferous fauna from the Sierra de Castillo unit Sierra de la Estrella, which is in an Asbian/Brigantian reef, buildup or bioherm reef rocks/marl in the Sierra del Castillo Formation of Spain. It is the type species of Estrellaspongia.
