Cheilea was named by Modeer (1793) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Calyptraeidae by Wilson (1993); to Hipponicidae by Gardner (1947), MacNeil (1960), Weisbord (1962), Ladd (1972), Todd (2001); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
