Colposigma was named by Finlay and Marwick (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Colposigma mesalia.

It was assigned to Turritellidae by Beu et al. (1990); to Turritellinae by Stilwell and Zinsmeister (1992), Allmon (1996); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
