Sericodon was named by Meyer (1845).

It was synonymized subjectively with Steneosaurus by Andrews (1913).

It was assigned to Saurii by Meyer (1845); to Aeolodontinae by Johnson et al. (2020); and to Aeolodontini by Young et al. (2024).
