Cypraeerato was named by Schilder (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Erato bimaculata.

It was reranked as Proterato (Cypraerrato) by Fleming (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Lachryma by Cernohorsky (1971); it was reranked as Proterato (Cypraeerato) by Vaught et al. (1989).

It was assigned to Proterato by Fleming (1966), Vaught et al. (1989); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
