Diempterus was named by Piette (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath J Kimm Sepkoski's reference number: 1074]. Its type is Diempterus lonqueueanus.

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); to Aporrhainae by Kollmann (2009); and to Spinilomatinae by GrĂ¼ndel et al. (2009).
