Lepidotes gigas was named by Agassiz (1832). It is the type species of Lepidotes.
It was recombined as Lepidotus gigas by Agassiz (1833), Agassiz (1834), Agassiz (1837); it was synonymized objectively with Lepidotus elvensis by Woodward (1916); it was synonymized objectively with Lepidotes elvensis by Wenz (1967).
