Heterosteus was named by Asmuss (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant. Its type is Heterosteus asmussi. It is the type genus of Heterosteidae.
It was corrected as Heterostius by Zhu et al. (2016), van der Laan (2019).
It was assigned to Chelonichthyidae by Jordan (1963); to Heterosteidae by Denison (1978); to Arthrodira by Woodward (1891), Sepkoski (2002); to Heterostiidae by Zhu et al. (2016); and to Dunkleosteidae by van der Laan (2019).
