Megalapteryx was named by Haast (1885). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Anomalopterygidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Dinornithidae by Carroll (1988); to Emeidae by Worthy (1997); and to Megalapterygidae by Bunce et al. (2009).
