Taxonomy
Didelphis opossum was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Philander.

It was recombined as Metachirus opossum by Thomas (1911); it was recombined as Philander opossum by International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1998).
