Telescopium was named by Monfort (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cerithiidae by Oostingh (1935); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Potamididae by Shuto (1978), Wilson (1993) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
