Cytherea sulcataria was named by Deshayes (1825) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Eocene; France.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Pitar (Calpitaria) sulcataria by Jukes-Browne (1908), Stenzel et al. (1957), Kluschnikov (1964) and Le Renard and Pacaud (1995); it was recombined as Calpitaria sulcatarius by Kemp (1976); it was recombined as Pitar sulcataria by Wozny (1977); it was recombined as Calpitaria sulcataria by Bone (1978); it was recombined as Pitar sulcatoria by Glibert (1985); it was recombined as Pitar sulcatarius by Bone et al (1991); it was recombined as Pitar sulcatorius by Tracey et al (1995); it was recombined as Pitar (Calpitaria) sulcatarius by Jeffery and Tracey (1997).
