Cancellaria tessellata was named by Sowerby (1832) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Gulf of California-Peru.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Aphera.

It was recombined as Aphera tessellata by Adams and Adams (1854), Landau et al. (2012) and Landau et al. (2012).
