Plumatalinia was named by Nestor (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara S Ludl-l]. Its type is Plumatalinia ferax. It is the type genus of Plumataliniidae.
It was assigned to Labechiidae by Nestor (1960), Nestor (1964); to Plumataliniinae by Stearn et al. (1999); to Stromatoporoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plumataliniidae by Stock (2015).
