Taxonomy

Machaeroprosopus was named by Mehl (1916). Its type is Machaeroprosopus andersoni.

It was synonymized subjectively with Phytosaurus by Case (1922); it was synonymized subjectively with Rutiodon by Kuhn (1964).

It was assigned to Phytosauria by Mehl (1916); to Mystriosuchidea by Huene (1922); to Phytosauridae by Hay (1930); to Pseudopalatinae by Hungerbühler et al. (2013), Stocker and Butler (2013), Parker et al. (2013); and to Mystriosuchini by Kammerer et al. (2016).

Synonyms

Redondasaurus was named by Hunt and Lucas (1993). Its type is Redondasaurus gregorii.

It was synonymized subjectively with Machaeroprosopus by Hungerbühler et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Parasuchia by Lucas et al. (1997); to Parasuchidae by Hunt and Lucas (1993), Spielmann and Lucas (2012); and to Pseudopalatinae by Stocker and Butler (2013).
Arribasuchus was named by Long and Murry (1995).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pseudopalatus by Hungerbühler (2002), Zeigler et al. (2002), Irmis (2005); it was synonymized subjectively with Machaeroprosopus by Hungerbühler et al. (2013), Parker et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Pseudopalatinae by Long and Murry (1995).
Pseudopalatus was named by Mehl (1928). Its type is Pseudopalatus pristinus. It was considered paraphyletic by Stocker (2010), monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was synonymized subjectively with Rutiodon by Kuhn (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Machaeroprosopus by Hungerbühler et al. (2013), Parker et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Phytosauridae by Hay (1930); to Pseudopalatinae by Long and Murry (1995), Parker and Irmis (2006); to Pseudopalatinae by Stocker (2010); and to Phytosauria by Nesbitt (2011).
