Plectronoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran-u Cm Trep-l Sepkoski's reference number: 297]. Its type is Cyrtoceras cambria.

It was assigned to Plectronoceratidae by Flower (1964), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981); and to Plectonocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
