Trematoceras was named by Eichwald (1851) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen Tr u]. Its type is Orthoceras elegans. It is the type genus of Trematoceratidae.
It was assigned to Michelinoceratinae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002); to Orthoceratidae by Shigeta and Zakharov (2009), Shigeta and Nguyen (2014), Brayard et al. (2019); and to Trematoceratidae by Pohle and Klug (2024).
