Pseudotemnocheilus was named by Ruzhentsev and Shimanskiy (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus posttuberculatus.

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); to Tainoceratidae by Ruzhentsev and Shimanskiy (1954), Korn et al. (2020); and to Metacoceratidae by Korn (2025).
