Pseudotemnocheilus was named by Ruzhentsev and Shimanskiy (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus posttuberculatus.

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tainoceratidae by Ruzhentsev and Shimanskiy (1954) and Korn et al. (2020).
