Taxonomy
Cervus camelopardalis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Giraffa.

It was recombined as Giraffa camelopardalis by Brisson (1762), Thomas (1911), Dagg (1971), International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1998), Mitchell and Skinner (2003), Geraads et al. (2004), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008) and Harris et al. (2010).
