Taxonomy
Anarcestes was named by Mojsisovics (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Goniatites plebeius. It is the type genus of Anarcestaceae, Anarcestidae.

It was assigned to Anarcestinae by Arkell et al. (1957); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anarcestidae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
