Taxonomy
Goniatites was named by Haan (1825) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites sphaericus. It is the type genus of Goniatitidae, Goniatitaceae, Goniatitinae.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Goniatitinae by Korn (2006) and Korn and Titus (2015); and to Goniatitidae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009) and Klug et al. (2016).
