Tropites (Anatropites) was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Tropites (Anatropites) spinosus.

It was reranked as Anatropites by Smith (1927), Spath (1951), Tozer (1981), Tozer (1994) and Sepkoski (2002).
