Tannuolinidae was named by Fonin and Smirnova (1967).

It was assigned to Metazoa by Bengtson (1992); to Mitrosagophora by Bengtson (1970) and Li and Xiao (2004); and to Tommotiida by Landing (1984), Holmer et al. (2008) and Kouchinsky et al. (2010).
