Taxonomy
Parapopanoceras was named by Haug (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-m Tr Anis-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Parapopanoceratidae.

It was reranked as Popanoceras (Parapopanoceras) by Hyatt and Smith (1905).

It was assigned to Popanoceras by Hyatt and Smith (1905); to Megaphyllitidae by Spath (1951) and McLearn (1969); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Parapopanoceratidae by Tozer (1981), Tozer (1994) and Korn (2006).
