Taxonomy
Protrachyceras was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-l Tr Ladi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is the type genus of Protrachyceratinae.

It was reranked as Trachyceras (Protrachyceras) by Smith (1904).

It was assigned to Trachyceras by Smith (1904); to Trachyceratidae by Spath (1951); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protrachyceratinae by Tozer (1981), Brack and Rieber (1993), Tozer (1994) and Urlichs (2017).
