Taxonomy
Acanthoceras was named by Neumayr (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Ceno-u]. Its type is Ammonites rhotomagensis. It is the type genus of Acanthocerataceae, Acanthoceratidae.
It was assigned to Acanthoceratidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956), Matsumoto (1959), Zaborski (1985), Matsumoto and Skwarko (1991) and Matsumoto and Skwarko (1993); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Acanthoplitinae by Robert and Bulot (2005); and to Acanthoceratinae by Förster (1975), Kennedy et al. (1988), Kennedy (1994), Wright et al. (1996), Kennedy et al. (1996), Barroso-Barcenilla (2004), Kennedy and Jolkicev (2004), Mosavinia and Wilmsen (2011), Kennedy (2013) and Gale et al. (2018).
