Berniceras was named by Jeannet (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-l]. Its type is Oppelia inconspicua.

It was assigned to Taramelliceratinae by Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
