Cophinoceras was named by Whitehouse (1928) [Cophinoceras Hyatt, 1900 is a lapsus for Kophinoceras Hyatt, 1884 therefore Cophinoceras Whitehouse, 1928 is NOT a homonym].

It was assigned to Desmoceratidae by Whitehouse (1928); to Beudanticeratinae by Wright et al. (1996); and to Uhligellinae by Latil et al. (2023).

  • Beudantiella was named by Breistroffer (1947) ["Proposed by Breistroffer (1947, p. 99) as a new name for Cophinoceras Whitehouse, 1928, on the assumption that this name was invalidated by Cophinoceras Hyatt, 1900, a subsequent spelling of Kophinoceras Hyatt, 1884. Whether the name Cophinoceras Hyatt, 1900, has status in zoological nomenclature and preoccupies a later name of the same spelling depends on its being treated as an emendation rather than an erroneous subsequent spelling (Hemming, 1953, pp. 44-5). For a subsequentspelling to be established as an emendation, the author must make it clear that the change is intentional. Hyatt did not do this; in the text (Hyatt, 1900, p. 522) he used the spelling Cophinoceras without comment; in the index to the work (Zittel, 1900, p. 696) it is spelt Cophinaceras. The view may betaken, therefore, that Cophinoceras Hyatt, 1900, is an erroneous subsequent spelling without status in nomenclature, and that Cophinoceras Whitehouse, 1928, is not in need of replacement."     It was synonymized subjectively with Cophinoceras by Casey (1961), Wright et al. (1996), Latil et al. (2023).

    It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
