Ocypodoidea was named by Rafinesque (1815). It is extant. Its type is Ocypode.
It was assigned to Brachyrhyncha by Collins and Morris (1975); to Heterotremata by Feldmann and Keys (1992); and to Thoracotremata by Collins and Wienberg Rasmussen (1992), Feldmann et al. (1995), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2023).
