Asterolepis was named by Eichwald (1840). Its type is Asterolepis ornata. It is the type genus of Asterolepididae.

It was assigned to Asterolepidae by Hay (1902); and to Asterolepididae by Woodward (1891) and Elliott et al. (2000).
