Hulenites was named by Matsumoto (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u K Albi-u]. Its type is Puzosia reesidei.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Marshallitinae by Wright et al. (1996) and Matsukawa (2021).
