Kilianella was named by Uhlig (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: K Berr K Vala-u]. Its type is Ammonites roubaudianus.

It was reranked as Hoplites (Kilianella) by Pervinquiére (1907); it was reranked as Thurmannia (Kilianella) by Sayn (1907).

It was assigned to Thurmannia by Sayn (1907); to Hoplites by Pervinquiére (1907); to Ammonoidea by Imlay (1960) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Neocomitinae by Klein (2005).
