Lithacoceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-m J Tith-u]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Virgatosphinctes (Lithacoceras) by Indians (1954).

It was assigned to Virgatosphinctes by Indians (1954); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Ataxioceratidae by Parent et al. (2011); and to Lithacoceratinae by Salazar and Stinnesbeck (2016).
