Lyelliceras was named by Spath (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Albi-m]. Its type is Ammonites lyelli. It is the type genus of Lyelliceratidae, Lyelliceratinae.
It was assigned to Lyelliceratidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lyelliceratinae by Spath (1930), Kennedy and Klinger (2008).
