Melchiorites was named by Spath (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-l K Apti-u]. Its type is Ammonites melchioris.

It was assigned to Beudanticeratinae by Renz (1982); to Puzosiinae by Förster and Weier (1983) and Landra et al. (2000); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
