Taxonomy
Metoicoceras was named by Hyatt (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-m K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 716,901]. It is the type genus of Metoicoceratidae.

It was corrected as Metoecoceras by Böse (1923).

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Böse (1923); to Metoicoceratinae by Cooper (1978); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mammitinae by Chancellor (1982), Kennedy and Cobban (1990), Meister et al. (1992), Wright (1996), Cooper (1998) and Barroso-Barcenilla (2004).
